Thursday Aug 18 [1864]

Received orders to move at 4 a.m.
took up our line of march about
5 direction South. Struck the Rail Road
at 12m. halted in an open field About
1PM Our batteries commenced fireing
we were drawn up in line. Deployed
[?] Skirmishers and advanced through
very thick woods until they opened a fire
on us the line advanced & fell back
several times and finally took a
position near the edge of the wood. In
sight of ^'Rebel' rifle Pits. rained all day 12th
